Grower Technician

The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development (DNRED) is seeking an individual to join the Forest Operations and Development Branch as a Grower Technician, at the Provincial Forest Nursery, in Island View.

As a member of the Forest Nursery Operations team and reporting to the Assistant Coordinator, the successful candidates will be responsible for the following: growing forest seedlings within a greenhouse complex and/or outdoor holding areas; organizing logistics within an assigned crop area, using specialized technical equipment and computerized greenhouse controls and metering equipment; applying and determining quantities of water, pesticides and fertilizers; handling and preparing chemicals such as pesticides, chlorine and peroxide, in accordance with specified safety procedures; assessing crop needs by measuring height, weight, color, structure and collecting samples for soil chemistry, foliar nutrients, bud set, frost hardiness and plant viability. Duties will include preparing, operating, and maintaining Irrigation systems, and designing system layout. These positions are responsible for maintaining detailed data of crop treatments, documenting trials, ensuring accurate crop identification and crop histories, maintaining inventory records of pesticides and chemicals, and recording pest and disease levels. These Grower positions are also responsible for assisting with general operations and maintenance, including minor greenhouse repairs, sanitation of greenhouses, operation of seed line, moving and layout of crops, and covering crops for overwinter protection. Responsibilities may include supervising and providing direction to casual growing staff and student assistants. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by a diploma from a minimum one-year recognized technical program in a resource related field such as Forestry, Agriculture or Horticulture, or equivalent; a minimum of three (3) years of related post-diploma experience, including one (1) year of directly related work experience in a tree nursery environment. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Depending on the response to this competition, candidates with less than the required years of experience may be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate the following: a minimum of four (4) years of related post-diploma experience, including a minimum of two (2) years of directly related work experience in a tree nursery environment. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:  The successful candidate will possess the following technical competencies:

  • Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge of tree nursery/greenhouse operations, including the process and procedures for growing tree seedlings;
  • Ability to use office technology, software and applications;
  • Planning and organizing skills.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: work a 40-hour week; work extended hours and weekends when necessary to meet operational requirements; operate specialized equipment, including generators, pumps, and injectors; operate all-terrain vehicles; handle pesticides, fertilizers and hazardous chemicals, in accordance with specified safety procedures; possess or successfully complete Pesticide Applicator Certification within three (3) months of commencement, and possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

SALARY:  $1,514 to $1,902 bi-weekly
