Who we are
The New Brunswick Human Rights Commission is responsible for the administration of the Human Rights Act. The mandate of the Commission is to administer the mechanism for complaint intake and resolution, to promote an understanding of, acceptance of, and compliance with the Act; and to develop and conduct educational programs designed to eliminate discriminatory practices.
The NB Human Rights Commission is seeking an individual to join the Legal Affairs Section as a Legal Counsel.
What you will do
Reporting to the General Counsel, the successful candidate will work in a team setting and be responsible for providing legal advice and opinions to Commission Members and staff with respect to the interpretation of the Human Rights Act, to investigation files and to legal procedures. Responsibilities will also include advising the General Counsel, Director and Chairperson of developments in human rights law and proposing legislative amendments, coordinating the review and reporting of international human rights instruments, and any matters pertaining to human rights policies or programs under the purview of the Commission.

Need to have (Essential qualifications and skills)
- Law Degree
- Membership in good standing or eligibility for membership to the Law Society of New Brunswick
- Minimum of 5 years of membership in good standing at the bar
- Experience in research in International human rights instruments
- Demonstrated experience in the practice of human rights law or similar experience in administrative law
- Experience in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation
Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.

Nice to have (asset qualifications)
Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate, commensurate with years at the bar:
- Experience in appearing before adjudicative boards and tribunals
- Experience in conducting briefings to senior personnel
- Relevant experience in applying the principles of equity/diversity competence in performing the job responsibilities of this position including recognition of the need to deliver services to the public in a manner that recognizes the unique needs of the diverse communities served
Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.
Operational requirements
- Possession of a valid driver's license
- Position requires some travel and remote work.
Wage
$78,286 to $105,612 annually, depending on education and experience.
