Not only is the department responsible for managing over 18,000 kilometers of provincial highways, it also manages the planning, design and construction of hospitals, schools and other government buildings.
The Construction Branch manages the Department's highway and bridge construction program which includes oversight of paving, chip seal, culvert, and bridge contracts. The Branch is also responsible to maintain, develop and implement the various construction specifications, standards, testing procedures, and ensure consistency in their application.
What you will do?
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is seeking an individual to join the Construction Branch as the Senior Grading Engineer.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Construction - Highways Section, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
- supervising technical staff;
- assisting with supervising the management of the Provincial highway grading program;
- ensuring that grading contracts and projects for the construction and reconstruction of provincial highways are completed in accordance with the issued plans and specifications, according to current engineering methods and practices;
- providing engineering, financial, managerial and administrative support services for the provincial highway capital programs;
- providing technical advice to branch and district staff on all aspects of grading construction and grading contract claims;
- reviewing tender documents, specifications and plans at the pretender stage to ensure accuracy and all aspects of work are included;
- developing quality control standards and specifications, and ensuring their uniform application;
- training and coordination for construction engineers and technicians in various aspects of grading work;
- branch input review and feedback with respect to environmental items;
- training of supervisory field staff to ensure environmental requirements are understood;
- ensuring environmental monitoring is performed as identified in Environmental approvals, and
- participating in Committees - Utilities, Specifications, etc.
Work environment:
- Office location: 440 King Street, Fredericton
(other office locations within NB can be considered if operational requirements permit).
- Open office layout
- Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday

Essential Qualifications:
Engineer 3:
- University degree in Civil Engineering.
- A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in highway construction which must include a minimum of two (2) years experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick.
- Knowledge of computer technology applied to Engineering is required.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.
If there are no applicants with the above essential qualifications, we may consider applicants with the following qualifications and appoint at a lower classification.
Engineer 2:
- University degree in Engineering.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in highway construction which must include a minimum of one (1) year experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick.
- Knowledge of computer technology applied to Engineering is required.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

SALARY:
Engineer 3: $2,568.83 to $3,516.04 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week.
Engineer 2: $2,404.10 to $3,212.07 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week.
